An interview with Adobe Senior Creative Director Russell Brown on Photoshop past, present, and Adobe Photoshop CS5 New Features in the future. In a recent interview Russell Brown discusses Adobe® Photoshop® as it was, and is, and possibly more importantly to many anxious users, what Photoshop CS5 may be in its future, and the Adobe Creative Suites 5.
Who is Russell Brown? Well, in words from his own website, Russell Brown is “Photoshop’s chief entertainer/instructor/evangelist”.
Dr. Brown, as he is known, talks about the approximate time frame for the expected release date of Adobe Photoshop CS5 and thus the Adobe CS5 Creative Suites as 18-24 months from the last release.
He also speaks of the porting of Photoshop CS5 to 64bit on the Mac platform to enable the use of more than 4gb RAM, for those who have it, and need the extra RAM room. This feature will improve performance by allowing Photoshop to keep more data in RAM as opposed to needing slower disc in/out activities during image editing.
At the time of my writing this update, the complete Adobe Photoshop CS5 System Requirements have not yet been announced. There is no public information that the requirements for computers running Adobe® Photoshop® CS5 will be any different than those for CS4.
Update: Note the fact that Adobe Photoshop CS5 Will Not Run on Older Apple PPC Macs.
In some recent Adobe Photoshop CS5 News, Adobe Photoshop’s Principle Product Manager, John Nack, has stated that the next version of Photoshop (CS5) will run on both 32bit and 64bit systems for both Mac and Windows. See Adobe Photoshop CS4 CS5 System Requirements + Graphics Cards for more info on system requirements.
He hints maddeningly vaguely, perhaps, about upcoming CS5 ‘digital photography features’. He says to ask the marketing people what they can reveal at this time, alas.
Some time is spent about the efforts being placed in making the leap from Apple’s Carbon to Cocoa. (My words here: Apple tells everyone: software makers, manufacturers, and users to leap and everyone says ‘how high this time!’)
The audio-only piece is on the Photoshop Creative Magazine podcast page (see link below). The interview is conducted by their staff writer, Simon Skellon. The sound quality leaves a bit to be desired but it is still worth a listen, especially if you are dying to hear any words by an official from Adobe about the CS5 version that we Photoshop lovers are awaiting hungrily.
The Photoshop CS5 New Features section occurs about 1/2 way through the piece for those who just can’t wait.
