Getting to see and photograph a building implosion is so much better than seeing one on TV! It was seriously kewl!
People gathered early on a otherwise quiet Sunday morning to witness the first bulding implosion in Phoenix, Arizona in over 30 years.
On this super sunny Sunday morning, the media one-ring circus was roped off for the VIP dignitaries such as this petite attendee in her ‘dressed for the occasion’ sun dress.
Security helicopters were circling around, and the various local news helicopters took up stationary positions.
The dignitaries seemed enthusiastic.
People staked out their viewing positions. Here, the grinning lad gets a bit of extra viewing height.
The skin and much of the material had been removed, leaving the steel and concrete. The asbestos was also said to be removed prior to demolition. So they said.
About 10 minutes after the scheduled time, the detonations began like rapid fire cannon bursts. The building appeared to hang for a couple of seconds before the top began to collapse.
I’m working on a small movie of the event, but until then, enjoy these images cropped from hi-res still photos.
great shots. Where were you situated?
We were on top of a parking garage just to the WSW of the Qwest building. We had a pretty good view of the event.
Very cool. I’ve never seen one.
It was my first (and so far, only) time too.
Re. Image # 4: Looks like security (in orange shirts) caught a live one.
That’s exactly what the incident report said, ‘a live one!’
