Coming soon to an inexpensive cell phone near you – a 5mp (megapixel) camera sensor that shoots RAW files, HD 1080p video, and 720p video in low light!
That’s right. RAW format in a cell phone!
OmniVision has just announced the OV5647 OmniVision 5-megapixel CMOS image sensor.
The new OmniBSI technology enables the OV5647 to deliver 5-megapixel photography and high frame rate 720p/60 high-definition (HD) video capture. “The superior pixel performance of the OV5647 enables 720p and 1080p HD video at 30 fps with complete user control over formatting and output data transfer.”
This means that we will soon (slated to go into mass production July) have a RAW camera sensor in average priced cellphones capable of relatively low light photography and video. This is intended for many price ranges of cellphones, not limited to high end smartphones only.
